Troubleshooting A Sub-Sea Acoustic System

Troubleshooting a sub-sea acoustic system requires a panic free, patient, systematic
and methodical approach together with an appreciation of the local working
environment. It is important to identify and confirm the requirement to troubleshoot
while also recording all remedial actions. Firstly, the operator must be certain that the
issue is sub-sea having checked the top-side equipment for error, e.g. software issue,
cabling, etc. Secondly, the context of the operation must be considered, e.g. the
occasional acoustic range measurement drop-out maybe be acceptable and not
warrant remedial action. Generally troubleshooting is required where it is confirmed
as a sub-sea issue with prolonged periods of poor or no data and / or
communications.

P I M P S

P = Panic Free

I = Identify

M = Methodical

P = Patience

S = Systematic

this is summary of the first step of troubleshooting the LBL system. if u need to have more info or a copy of the guide..i'll send u a copy

Handover note Survey Tech Higland Rover -

Handover note to Survey Engineer.

Hi Chong. Nothing much happened here since I’m joining this vessel last 6 weeks. Below some of the note need you to know.

General Items
1. Consumable and PEI are in Party Chief folder. Updated till to 6-11-2008 (Rev 10). Could you please put in the “REV CONTROL” sheet the update that you will make.
2. There are the Complete PC's belonging to us at the bridge x 1, ROV Q4 x 1, ROV Q2 x 1, Rep Office X 1 and got 3 0r 4 monitor. These PCs is still remain the same place and location.
3. EFR items :-
1. EFR 006 - HP DeskJet F380 with adaptor and printer cable – The problem is the feeder paper broken, cant feed the paper correctly.
2. EFR 005 - SMC -EZ6508TX 6V Hub – The diode on the PCB board bunt.

4. Due to HP DeskJet F380 problem, the A3 Printer form Report Writer container transferred to the client’s office and located at the Ril client’s desk.
5. The VHF radio antenna connector is broken and lost the screw for the grip of the cable to the connector. I just grip with the BNC grip and tied with the cable tie. FYI the antenna is located at the ROV Qc4 shack near to the gangway.
6. The 3 Com network switch spare for Visualsoft was used replace the faulty network switch behind the procesor pc.

LBL & Compatt
7. Testing Compatt can do in the report writer container or if u can use your laptop, there is a USB to Serial converter in the blue box below the Seabat Processor. No need the CD driver for the USB converter.
8. DTU Unit at the Processing Room and for the change battery tools also inside the DTU unit.
9. The LBL transducer is OK now after we change the head with the Calamity Jane. We also change the transducer cable. For the broken cable and intermittent transducer was packed and stored at the bosun store. So you will loose your headache after this.
10. Due to problem with ROV Qc 4, the ROVNav is attached to ROV Qc2.
11. There is 4 flotation collar without Compatt onboard.

WSM Beacon Transponder
12. Wideband Sub-mini beacon terminal is still at the PC computer and can run from the shortcut at task bar.
13. The lost transponder is consider lost.

Veripos
14. 1PPS TTL signal was connected from the P1 (pin 1 and 5) Veripos 3 to the TTL adaptor and connected to the comm1 Online PC** refer to the drawing below this handover note. ZDA input get from the same P1 and connected to the Comm 9 rocket port** refer to the drawing below this handover note.
15. The veripos (Inmarsat DGPS2) antenna cabling was broken and for now we are using the Veripos (Inmarsat DGPS3).

16. Khoon (Subsea 7) ask me to check the cable but nanang said its not priority.
17. We received the Veripos QC pc last 3 weeks and already installed to the online rack and the existing pc I put it below Seabat processor with the octopus cable tied with pc’s handle. The another spare for the veripos QC is located above the Veripos QC. The configuration for the new Veripos QC pc is started from Comm 4 (not Comm 3 like before).

Visualsoft
18. The location KVM switch for Visualsoft was changed by Hairel and use a new DLINK KVM switch due to “hang” previous KVM switch.

HANDOVER NOTES – Survey Tech Highland Rover 19 June 2008

1. Survey tech duty is from 0000 – 1200. U can refer to duty roster inside survey room.
2. Sonardyne Fusion – Pole and transducer head was installed. Lower down the pole when you want to use the LBL pole. Ask for assistance from bridge to lower the pole.
3. Audacia and Lorelay sometimes need a Compatt for a reference beacon. Please prepare the Compatt with the sand bag and we will deploy it with assistances of the marine crew.
4. Videotel at Survey Room (on top of rack) near surveyor online. Please switch on when need and switch off when we are not using it, to avoid interference with any vessels in this field.
5. We are using 2 ROV i.e. ROV Q2 & ROV Q4. We have 6 beacons here and the latest Frequency Management we received ask us to use 3 Beacon code only, B38, B58 and B78. Please update the beacon code when we receive any update on the Frequency Management. Update the beacon attached to the ROV to white board.(But for now only Q4 is running good. Q2 still repairing)
6. Charge the beacons in survey room as required.
7. At the moment, ROV is using our beacons for positioning and sometimes they use their own Responders when operating in shallow waters. There is no responder for the both ROVs, both of them are using the transponder.
8. ROV Q2 and ROV Q4 interfacing already done. Details for interfacing can be checked at “ C:\01 INDGH3206- DHIRUBHAI –INDIA\01 Party Chief\05 Logistic\01 Project Equipment List\ Comm Port&Beacon xls ”. At party chief computers.
9. Details for equipment and consumables are in “ C:\01 INDGH3206- DHIRUBHAI –INDIA\01 Party Chief\05 Logistic\01 Project Equipment List\HR Equipment List and Consumables.xls ”. at party chief computer. There is two location of our consumables, one in the suvey room and processing container . Please refer to Party Chief for further information.
Please update equipment list when any thing changed.
10. For more information U can ask Kamarul and Izzudin the Surveyors. Spare Dell CPU that was for Visualsoft is being used for any testing PC, Sonardyne Beacon terminal and also secret Internet.
11. We received the DTU (Deck Test Unit owned by Allseas) from Highland Fortress for us to re-arm the Compatt’s acoustic release before transfer it to the Lorelay or Audacia.
12. At the back of Archive Monitor the tags have been put for every BNC cable for swapping from Q2 to Q4 along with Audio Video connections.
13. During pipe tracker operation, please connect the pipe tracker “video in” to the BNC connector for the Videotel at the junction box near to the Online rack. We are sharing this BNC connector with the Videotel.
14. We don’t have any spare cartridge for new printer HP for Party Chief. We have ordered from TLGH office. Need to consult with Party Chief.
